J. Maarten Troost, The Sex Lives of the Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific (Broadway, 2004).
With visions of a tropical paradise, Troost followed his wife to the Pacific island of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. She went there to do development work for a non-profit organization, and he figured he would kick back, enjoy Eden, and maybe create a work of literature. As he found out, if Kiribati ever was a paradise, those days are lost. Now it is crowded, polluted, and miserably hot. Troost made the best of it; this comic account of his stay is a fun read, if not a literary classic. I didn’t love it as much as the person who recommended it to me did, but it was fun.,
